Staffing Updates

ReStore’s new AmeriCorps*VISTA member is Staysee Bogan. Staysee comes most recently from Northern Wisconsin, where she earned a B.S. in Environmental Science from Northland College. She brings lots of experience working for non-profits; in the past three years she could be found wading through wetlands to cut invasive plant species, managing volunteer-based watershed projects, and answering domestic abuse hotlines. During her term of service, Staysee will assist with every aspect of operations at the ReStore from reducing waste and landfill space to providing the greater Springfield area with affordable home improvement supplies. Welcome Staysee!

The ReStore is a great place to work or volunteer! We are currently seeking a Marketing and Outreach Coordinator. If you are interested in this position, please send a cover letter and resume to ReStore Home Improvement Center, 250 Albany Street, Springfield, MA 01105. You can view the job postings online.

We are also in need of volunteers to help us accomplish our mission. Administrative, truck helper and warehouse tasks available. If you would like to help the ReStore, please contact Staysee Bogan, our volunteer coordinator, at 413-788-6900.

ReStore’s First Workshop is a Hit!

The ReStore Home Improvement Center offered its first free workshop entitled “How to Button Up Your House for Winter” on Saturday, October 15th.

“Many people are concerned about the oncoming winter and the high price of heating their home,” said John Grossman, Store Manager. “This free workshop will show people simple and relatively inexpensive ways to reduce their heating bills,” he continued. “And saving energy has other benefits in addition to saving money - each time we use less energy, we are also helping the environment,” he said.

Over 30 people attended the workshop. They learned how to install weatherstripping around doors and windows and how to seal heat-losing air leaks to the attic or outside. The workshop was lead by energy experts from the Center for Ecological Technology (CETsm), the ReStore’s parent organization. CET works in thousands of homes each year to reduce their energy usage and costs through various local utility company programs.

Specialty weatherization products are available for purchase from the ReStore at reasonable prices, throughout the fall and winter. You can visit the ReStore’s website for links to tips and information on reducing home energy use.

Earth-friendly gift wrapping and hand-made gift ideas at the ReStore

This holiday season, the ReStore Home Improvement Center is presenting a display that shares environmentally friendly gift-wrapping techniques and hand-made gift ideas. These ideas are also fun and can save money.

Americans produce an estimated extra five million tons of waste between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. During the holiday season, gift-wrap remains on packages for only a short period of time before it is thrown away. Unfortunately, wrapping paper, ribbons and tape must be kept out of the recycling container.

Our 'ReWrap' display offers creative and fun ideas for wrapping gifts without standard wrapping paper. We will display alternatives to traditional wrapping methods and share other ways to reuse and reduce waste during the holiday season.

The display will include samples of gifts wrapped in outdated calendar pages, Sunday comics, maps, movie posters, and old wrapping paper. Other ideas including wrapping a gift-in-a-gift, using baskets or fabrics like scarves and handkerchiefs, or using decorative gift bags. The “ReWrap” display will also illustrate how to use old holiday cards and calendar pictures to make gift tags and gift boxes.

The display will also include do-it-yourself gift ideas including picture frames made from wood molding, and decorative coasters, hot plates and signs made from tile. These attractive gifts can be made using inexpensive used and surplus materials available at the ReStore.

The House that Leon Built

Leon King is a long time customer of the ReStore. He has been coming to the ReStore every week for the last year searching for items to build his new home in Hampden, MA. He bought all of his windows, doors, bath fixtures, kitchen cabinets, roof trusses, and whatever else he could use to build his home. You may be surprised to see how many items are reused and how great it looks. To see pictures of all this amazing reuse in action, visit our customer scrapbook page!

Do you have a nice photo of your project using ReStore materials? Send it to John Grossman, with an explanation of what you got at the ReStore, and we’ll add it to the scrapbook.
