ReStore keeps a home out of the trash

The ReStore Home Improvement Center recently completed taking apart a 2600 square foot home. A crew of ten demolished the house by hand and recovered nearly two-dozen truckloads of reusable materials - including windows, doors, flooring, lumber, and lighting and plumbing fixtures. The home was being demolished to make way for a new home that better meets the needs of the owners. The owners wanted to make sure that the materials in the existing home would not be thrown away and would be available to help others fix up their homes. Over two weeks and with nearly 900 person-hours of labor, the house was taken apart piece-by-piece right down to the foundation. Using only 6 roll off containers, instead of the 15 that would have been used with traditional demolition, the ReStore kept about 40-50 tons of usable materials out of the landfill. Call us if you’d like to discuss our cost-competitive deconstruction services and how we might be able to help with your demolition or remodeling project.

Welcome Noah!

North Adams Library and ReStore recover historic flooring, help environment

The North Adams Public Library has taken some innovative steps to help reuse lumber and other materials being removed during its ongoing renovation project. In cooperation with the Library’s contractor, Souliere and Zepka, the ReStore received 9000 pounds of 125-year-old spruce lumber and flooring. Instead of being thrown away, the wood has just been remilled into tongue and groove flooring. Thanks to the Library’s efforts, 1400 square feet of random width flooring is now available for purchase at the ReStore. We hope that a local resident interested in the historical and environmental significance of the flooring, as well as its beauty, will purchase the flooring for use in their home. The Library received credits towards the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System for diverting the wood and other materials from disposal to reuse. Library Director Marcia Gross and the Board have taken a leadership role in the community by using “green design” throughout the project and seeking the voluntary LEED certification.

The ReStore Home Improvement Center is an enterprise of Center for Ecological Technology (CET), a non-profit organization serving the community since 1976.

The ReStore’s mission is to:

  • Reuse valuable materials
  • Make home improvement affordable for more people
  • Create local jobs and provide job training
